Important information
for new Oral Appliance patients

If you have been referred for oral appliance therapy, please look through the following information about Oral Appliance Therapy for sleep disordered breathing for new patients
1. ORAL APPLIANCE THERAPY targets snoring/UARS/OSA, and is not a nightguard or braces.
The treatment process is in line with medical protocols for your safety. We offer a package which
covers all necessary treatment and follow-up sleep studies. This helps patients reduce costs
significantly, compared to independently conducted sleep studies.
2. SPECIFICATIONS We provide FDA approved and HSA and ISO 10993 compliant appliances.
The appliance is called a mandibular advancement splint (MAS) and are intraoral, Class II medical
devices, worn during sleep to treat snoring (ICD code R06.83) and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA)
ICD-10 code G47.33. MAS are made from materials such as USP Medical Grade VI Polymer or Nylon
polyamide, are classified as durable medical equipment, are non-toxic, biocompatible, and free of
harmful compounds such as BPA.
3. MEDICAL GUIDELINES Oral appliance therapy is a first line medical treatment for snoring, mild to moderate OSA, and in severe OSA intolerant of CPAP therapy. MAS therapy, is a process, in accordance with medical guidelines that specify prescribed appliances should be custom made, and titratable.
Regular follow-up and verification of efficacy with sleep study, long term monitoring and review are
essential for successful treatment. Treatment includes thorough evaluation of suitability and dental
fitness prior to its use, titration process with regular review, and follow-up sleep testing with home
sleep apnoea tests or higher level tests to ensure effectiveness of therapy in each patient.
We provide only the necessary treatment, that is strictly in accordance with the internationally
recognised guidelines of governing bodies AASM & AADSM.
4. MATERIALS/COST/LIFESPAN During consultation, you will be assessed and advised on the most
suitable appliance for you. Treatment cost is the same regardless of the brand/model/design of
appliance selected. With proper care and maintenance, an MAS appliance typically lasts 4–5 years.
Some patients are able to use theirs for even longer, and depends on a number of patient factors.
5. TEMPORARY DEVICES Store-bought boil-and-bite devices, dislodge more easily and have higher
incidence of side effects and injury. We have professional grade temporary devices which are fitted
in the clinic, and superior to self-applied devices. These are for specific patients who require viable
interim solutions for treating pregnancy OSA or while undergoing active dental treatment with
implant surgery or prosthodontic work. They are only for short term to minimise side effects.
6. QUALIFIED PROVIDER Oral Appliance Therapy with MAS is under a specialized branch of Dentistry
called Dental Sleep Medicine. Only qualified providers who undergo further training in this field are
able to safely and effectively treat patients with sleep disordered breathing.
Dr Elaine Ng is dual qualified in Dentistry (NUS) and Sleep Medicine (USydney), and credentialled in
Dental Sleep Medicine from ABDSM, AADSM and ASA. With over 25 years of clinical experience,
